The Opportunity

We are delighted to be recruiting for a Head of Credit Risk to join our established and highly regarded Risk function at Triodos Bank UK (TBUK).

The Credit Risk team has an overarching responsibility for review, challenge, and approval of lending within TBUK and the function is a guardian of the mission-driven lending, so that the Bank builds a healthy, high-quality credit portfolio, with a particular specialism in the SME market and the Housing Association, Health Care and renewables sectors. The Credit Risk team comprises a mix of Credit Analysts and Special Asset Management with a responsibility for supporting any customers in default. Credit Risk actively promote and nurture a healthy credit culture across Triodos Bank, enhancing local and international cross-pollination and transfer of best practices, and helping align these with UK/Group-level strategic targets.

Reporting to the UK Chief Risk Officer (CRO) the Head of Credit Risk will play a crucial role in contributing to the Bank’s strategic development and demonstrating strong personal commitment to the mission and values of the Bank. The Head of Credit Risk works closely with the UK management team, in particular the Business Banking Director and co-workers across Finance, chairs the UK Credit Committee, attends the Group’s Credit Committee and manages some key external relationships with professional advisors.

You Will
• Lead the Credit Risk team function, which includes setting the second line credit risk strategy, providing leadership, plus mentoring and supporting team members with their own personal development.
• Set the direction and approach to the strategic assessment, review and monitoring of credit risks and controls. This includes assessing the implementation, the embedding, through to on-going adequacy these controls.
• Provide specialist expertise in building and maintaining the portfolio level credit analysis and reporting of Business Lending to facilitate decision making at all levels within TBUK, will identify risk concentrations and correlations and propose the appropriate mitigations.
• Oversee and validate all relevant models (e.g. credit scoring, expected credit loss and stress testing) deployed by TBUK on Business Lending credit exposures, and provide input and insight into the Bank’s ICAAP and other financial considerations.

This role is designated as a Certification Regime role within the Senior Managers and Certification Regime under the category “Significant Management” because the role has a high level of responsibility and autonomy of action within the authority delegated to it.

This role has a high degree of autonomy and offers the benefits of hybrid working with a blend of office and remote working. Typically, this would require 2 days in our Bristol office per week, with a choice of working from home on the other days. Use of the Edinburgh/London offices may also be available and some travel to our Group Head Office in the Netherlands will be required.

What We Are Looking For

To be successful in this role you will have extensive experience in all aspects of SME lending, underwriting of commercial loans and overdrafts, in particular SME lending, including charities and project finance, in the social housing, healthcare and renewable energy sectors; must have held (and exercised) a lending mandate in a UK Bank operating in similar sectors for a significant period of time; be highly skilled in credit analysis and risk assessment in the UK banking sector.

The ability to develop strategies for distressed clients and managing to recovery, combined with a strong conceptual and analytical capacity to enable critical and insightful review of credit portfolio management is needed. Exposure to the review and approval of complex legal agreements and an in depth understanding of credit risk models and forecasting is also required.

You will have outstanding people management, leadership and stakeholder management skills, be able to build excellent working relationships, and confidently deal with contrasting views across 1st,2nd, and 3rd line risk perspectives.
