The Payments Directorate is at the heart of the UK’s financial system – operating the Real Time Gross Settlement service and CHAPS the wholesale payment service. Over £775 billion is settled each day across this critical national infrastructure. We are in the process of an exciting transformation programme to renew RTGS, strengthening resilience and promoting completion and innovation. Job Description
The data and analysis team owns the extensive RTGS dataset which includes the details of approximately 350 million CHAPS transactions, and the tools for storing and managing that data. Our data scientists provide analysis to support RTGS / CHAPS operations, Payments Directorate policy and wider Bank monetary and financial stability objectives. We do this utilising a wide range of data science techniques, and are… always interested in bringing new and innovative approaches to our work.
We strive for continuous improvement in data and analysis within and outside Payments Directorate, including through development and release of additional tools. The team is responsible for a set of regular operational reports, which adapt to user needs, and are automated where possible. We are expanding our work to include more proactive research and analysis that exploits our data to influence policy making. More broadly, we want our work to align with our wider data strategy and approach.
Role Requirements:
Minimum (Essential) Criteria
• Practitioner-level knowledge of coding: one (or more) of SQL, R Python, or Tableau.
• Experience in applying data science techniques to large datasets for operational / policy / business needs.
• Able to work as part of a data science team and collaborate with wider stakeholders to deliver influential analysis.
• Ability to manage and prioritise multiple competing projects and stakeholders to make sure that work delivers to agreed timescales.
Desirable Criteria
• Experience of using collaboration, version control and DevOps tools such as Jira, Confluence, Azure DevOps, and GitHub.
• Experience in building relationships outside their immediate team to deliver analysis that meets customer needs
• Experience in delivering analysis where requirements are ambiguous or uncertain
• Understanding of data governance principles and best practice.
• An understanding of common database concepts, including data warehouses.
• Able to demonstrate ongoing professional development and commitment to learning
• Experience working with a variety of big data sources including numeric, text, time series etc.
• Able to utilise data science to improve long standing and legacy approaches
This is a people management role. You will be responsible for day to day management of the team and for defining roles and responsibilities. You will develop your team through sharing information effectively, coaching and communicating a clear vision to ensure that your staff are productive, engaged and motivated to deliver the area’s aims. This will include setting clear goals and smart stretching objectives that are aligned to those of the team, division and directorate. You will also be responsible for managing all staff-related matters that may arise including performance, absence and sickness.

Salary and Benefits Information
We encourage flexible working, part time working and job share arrangements. Part time salary and benefits will be on a pro-rated basis as appropriate.
London location: salary range of £55,615-£64,170 (depending on skills and experience).
Leeds location: salary range of £50,080-£57,780 (depending on skills and experience).
In addition, we also offer a comprehensive benefits package as detailed below:
• A non-contributory, career average pension giving you a guaranteed retirement benefit of 1/95th of your annual salary for every year worked. There is the option to increase your pension (to 1/50th) or decrease (to 1/120th) in exchange for salary through our flexible benefits programme each year.
• A discretionary performance award based on a current award pool.
• A 8% benefits allowance with the option to take as salary or purchase a wide range of flexible benefits.
• 26 days’ annual leave with option to buy up to 12 additional days through flexible benefits.

National Security Vetting Process
Employment in this role will be subject to the National Security Vetting clearance process (and typically can take between 6 to 12 weeks post offer) and the passing of additional Bank security checks in accordance with the Bank policy.
